Cypher in Albany, NY's Colonie Mall

It was like a scene straight out of hip hop's past for Lids employee/aspiring rap artist Myk Skeemz, when he found himself in the middle of cyclical, free-styling mayhem.

"I was at work and I was letting one of my boys hear a few bars. A customer came in and they heard me so they started spitting, my cousin came in the store and he started spitting and then some more people heard and they came in," Skeemz said.

For those of you who don't know a cypher is not a battle, the rules are simple: DON'T BREAK THE CYPHER. That's just what these guys did not do. The cypher grew until about six different people were throwing versus back and forth. It lasted for about a half an hour. Onlookers were amazed by what they were hearing and seeing. Skeemz was glad to hear all of the positive feedback.

Myk Skeemz originally born Michael O'Kaine first discovered his love of hip hop and more specifically rap music when he was just 11-years-old. Now that he's 21 that love is as strong as it's ever been. He's lyrics derive strictly from real life experiences which is prevelent in this verse:
U think I'm loOkin in tha sky
(Naw)
I'm loOkin straight into my mothers eyes
She gave me devilish thoughts, trust in god, a Spartans pride
Tha heart that I've aquired requires a smile from my daughter daily
Wit out that I'm liable to go wild krazy,
Like a werewolf ina full moOn
U know the rose that grows from tha concrete,
That's me when it's fully bloOmed
My dude
Tha difference between me n tha average rapper
I live it out then spit about it after
Wanna get on tha same page as me easy skip a few chapters

"Everything you hear me spit is something I have done, I'm doing or I will do depending on the situation I'm placed in..."

It's Becoming a Trend (yes, this week I'm going off the topic of my blog with the posts)

With all of these songs about heartbreak why doesn't Kanye just ask VH1 to hook him up with a reality show? No need to complain about not having any kids, if it's a baby mama he needs Vh1 surely can help, hey it worked for Ray J.

Crisp New Videos Of The Week

Hmmm sexy magic indeed, this video is full of tongue licking and booty grabbing. Ms. Ciara has got Justin touching all over her sexy back (pun intended, haha). This video is colorful and very hot.

I like this woman's style, to me this video includes a mixture of old school visuals and soulful sounds from the one and only Laura Izibor. This Irish R&B singers voice is passionate, powerful and sweet, after one listen I already want to hear more.

The New Will Smith??

Rapper, singer and actor Aubrey “Drake” Graham is officially performing during
Culture Shock right here on our campus. That’s at SUNY Purchase for those of you who don’t know. Anyway, I really had never heard anything of his until this year. The first song I ever heard him on was the remix he did to Lykke Li’s song titled “Little Bit”. I already love that song but I think Drake’s voice as well as his lyrics enhanced the track and made me love it even more. Right after I finished listening to the song I wanted to hear more of Drake.

To me Drake is a very talented artist because he is extremely versatile; this Canadian born artist is a triple threat. Most of you would probably recognize him from his role as the wheel chair bound Jimmy Brooks on the show “Degrassi: The Next Generation.” I think he did well on the show; he’s a decent actor. He can also sing, he has a very smooth voice that I enjoy listening to. I feel like with so many talents he’s surely not as popular as he should be; but I guess he’s on the verge.

Drake has done some pretty crazy collaborations some say he is Lil Waynes prodigy. He has a single out right now titled “Replacement Girl” featuring Trey Songz, ladies you should check his “swagga” in that video: very sexy. He has a few albums and or mixtapes out including: Room for Improvement, Comeback Season and Drake: So Far Gone. You all should listen to one or all of those if you want to hear what he’s working with. So far my favorite song of his is “Brand New” I believe there is a remix of this song with featuring Lil’ Wayne.

So after reading this I know you all are excited about seeing drake perform at Culture Shock; which will be taking place April 17th and April 18th. I believe he’s performing on the first night but the lineup is still not officially set, but he is officially performing so you all should come out and enjoy.

What's On The Come Up all about?

Okay, so first posting is just to let you know what this blog is all about. Basically, I created this blog because I truly admire the passion within the struggling musician. Growing up, everyone around me adults and kids alike, everyone, had some sort of plot or plan to realize the American dream. Many times that plan would include some sort of hustle like selling drugs, gambling, making music, pushing CD's and occasionally you'd have the aspiring basketball or football player. For some people music is the only thing left to hope towards or even to wake up for. The Lupe Fiasco song "Hip Hop Saved my life" just describes it all, it's the truth. Problem is there are too many people in this world wanting to become famous musicians. But, every once in awhile there is that one person or persons among us who really have what it takes to make it. My mission is to seek out those few brilliant minds and tell their stories before anyone else gets the chance. I'm interested in talking to the artist who have a desire to create meaningul and refreshing works of art that will make the world dance and think all at once. I made this website to hopefully expose the sounds of those good artists, and let the world know that there still exists art and passion behind music. So feel free to post comments and let me know what artists you would like to see on the blog.
